About Frederick County Maryland


Frederick County is located in the western part of Maryland. The county was created in 1748. In 1776 portions of the county were split off to form Washington County and Montgomer county. In 1837, another part of Frederick county was combined with part of Baltimore county to establish Carroll County.

There are two cities within it's borders including Brunswick and Frederick, it's county seat. There are 9 towns: Burkittsville, Emmitsburg, Middletown, Mount Airy, Myersvill, New Market, Thurmont, Walkersville and Woodsboro. There is one village called Rosemont. Unincorporated towns are Ballenger Creek, Braddock Heights, Clover Hill, Discovery-Spring Garden, Green Valley, Linganore-Bartonsville and Adamstown.

The population of Frederick County as of the 2000 census was 195,277 people. There were 73017 housing units within its borders. The racial make up it's residence are 89.33% White, 6.36% Black, .21% Native American, 1.67% Asian, .03% Pacific Islander, .92% from other races and 1.47% from two or more races. There are less males than females in the area and the population is spread relatively even as far as age ranges.

There are many historic places to visit in Frederick County. The Cluster Spires of Frederick are a breath-taking sight. The spires were built in the 18th and early 19th century and can be seen on approach to Frederick along I-270 or the Old National Highway.

A monument to Francis Scott Key, who wrote the national anthem "The Star Spangled Banner", can be found at Eutaw Place in the Bolton Hill neighborhood.

The National Museum of Civil War Medicine, which is located in downtown Frederick at 48 East Patrick Street. The museum offers all aspects a soldier went through from signing up to their camping lifestyle to what medical practices were available.

Other historic sites include the South Mountain battlefields and the Schifferstadt Architectural Museum.

There are many family attractions to keep everyone amused. Adventure Park USA located in New Market, MD has go-karts, bumper boats, miniature golf and a lot more. They are open all year.

The Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo is located in Thurmont, MD on 35 acres. There animals from not only North America, but Austrailia, Latin America, Madagascar and Africa. They offer different educational programs as well.

If you like golf Frederick County Maryland has plenty. The Clustered Spires Golf Course offers an 18-hole course and is operated by the City of Frederick. The Hollow Creek Golf Club located in Middletown offers a challenging 18-holes designed by Rick Jacobson. The Maryland National Golf Club also located in Middletown offers 18-holes designed by Arthur Hills. The Musket Ridge Golf Club located in Myersville has beautiful views and was designed by Joe Lee. The P.B. Dye Golf Club, located in Ijamsville, offers 18-holes and is rated in the top 15 courses in Maryland. The Worthington Manor Golf club, located in Urbana, offers a Ault-Clark signature course.
