What To Do In Frederick, Maryland
Frederick, Maryland, with the fourth largest population in the state, is full of different places to go, see and do. The activities offer great ways for the family to spend the day or great ways for a couple to spend their nights.
One experience that everyone who visits Frederick, Maryland should not miss is visiting the "Community Bridge" (bridge.skyline.net) located between East Patrick & East All Saints Streets. This bridge is a cement bridge that has been made into a work of art by having stones painted on to it to make it look like a stone bridge. The artist of the bridge asked for ideas from the community to include in the mural for this bridge. The ideas came from thousands of people in the community as well as hundreds of people outside of the country.
Baker Park is located at 2nd and Bentz St. in downtown Frederick. This park is on 44 acres and includes a lake (Culler Lake) a carillon, band shell, tennis courts, softball and baseball field, a public swimming pool and lots of playgrounds. In the summer the park has numerous outdoor events including a children's theater.
For the history buff, the Hessian Barracks was a Revolutionary war prison and Civil War hospital. The Hessian Barracks is open for touring on the second Saturday of every month from May to December and is located at 242 South Market Street.
For a romantic tour of the Frederick Historic District look no farther than the Frederick Tour & Carriage company (frederickcarriageco.com/carriage.htm). The carriage company offers carriage rides from local bed & breakfasts in the area by appointment. Carriage rides are available for the family on the first Saturday of every month as part of the Downtown Gallery Walk.
There are quite a few places to visit for art and theater. The Cultural Arts Center located at 15 W. Patrick Street offers a black box theater, a dance studio, and a rehearsal hall. The Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center offers many art programs and offers a gift gallery for artists to sell their work. Fredericktowne Players is a community theatre organization open to anyone who wants to come and see the four shows they put on each season from September to July.
Golfing is a great way to spend the day and at the Frederick Golf club you can spend time on the driving range and then make your way through the 18 hole course. The Frederick Golf Club is located at 5519 S. Renn Road. Or spend the day at the Clustered Spires Golf Course, which has been voted Frederick's number one golf course by Frederick Magazine for the last 8 years in a row, located at 8415 Gas House Pike.
Another way to spend the day during September through October is at the Crumland Farms Corn Maze. Or all year long you can go ice skating at the Skate Frederick ice rink located at 1288 Riverbend Way.
