Maryland Golf
Maryland is fast becoming as popular a golf destination as Myrtle Beach or Hilton Head. Maryland's Eastern shore boasts over two dozen championship golf courses, with over a dozen in Ocean City alone. Public and Private courses along the eastern shore make it a haven for golfers of all skill levels. The proximity to the Beltway, Baltimore, and Philadelphia make it the perfect choice for a weekend golf outings. Prices vary from the pricier Ocean Front Resort Hotels to courses like the Pine Shores North, where on certain days you can buy a $20 hot dog, and have a round of golf and a cart thrown in free.
Maryland also hosts a stop along the PGA tour. Potomac's Tournament Players Championship at Avenel is the host site of the PGA's Booz Alan Classic. A 1.7 million dollar tournament won by Sergio Garcia last year. Opening in 1986, TPC Avenel hosted the PGA Chrysler Cup it's first year and was immediately put on the map when Arnold Palmer aced the 239 yard, par 3 hole # 3 in two consecutive rounds. In 1992 the 472-yard par four 12th hole was ranked "the toughest hole on the PGA tour". The TPC at Avenel is a private stadium golf facility featuring a 7,005 yard par 71, 18 hole course. If you can't make it to play this course, it is featured in several PGA golf video games.
Other great courses in Maryland include Ocean Pines, the Delmarva Peninsula's only championship 18 hole course. Ocean Pines was designed by legendary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. In 1971. The courses tree-lined fairways, heavily guarded greens, and subtle undulations on the putting greens make this one of the most challenging courses on the East Coast. The Ocean Pines Golf & Country Club is a membership course with limited tee times available to the public through advanced reservations.
The Bay Club offers 36 championship holes on two courses in Berlin, Maryland. The courses offer some of the best golfing in the area, intertwined with the wetland areas, and surrounding woodlands. The course is home to the legendary "Devil's Island", a par 3 island green on the 14th hole. The Bay Club is now part of the Carl M. Freeman Golf family, and is committed to unparalleled customer service.
While the Eastern Shore gets most of the attention from golfers, Maryland's only Jack Nicklaus Signature Championship Golf Course is located in Rocky Gap State Park. The park lies in the historic and scenic Cumberland Valley. Rocky Gap Lodge is a tranquil resort on the shores of Lake Habeeb. A relaxing spa with services including massages and facials, lakeside dining, and a wide assortment of outdoor activities are available. The front nine is carved out of the heavily wooded mountainside, with dramatic elevation changes, while the back nine features expansive gently rolling fairways for two distinct golfing experiences. The course is said to be so challenging that Jack Nicklaus himself never broke par here.
