Maryland Golf Courses
The state of Maryland offers up a variety of golf courses suitable for the next US Open Champ, or the weekend duffer. Two of Maryland's courses made the Golf Digest list of the 100 best courses in the country in 1992.
At number 55 was Baltimore Country Club, Timonium, Maryland. This course was designed in 1926 by A.W. Tillinghast, at a length of 6,844 yards.
Number 63 on the list was Congressional C.C. (Blue Course) in Bethesda, Maryland. Legendary designer Robert Trent Jones's course broke ground in 1962, and is the states longest at 7,250 yards. Congressional hosted the US Open in 1997, and is the second longest course to ever host the open.
Tournament Players Club at Avenel boasts a stop on the PGA tour. This Potomac, Maryland gem is host to the PGA's Booz Alan Classic. The 1.7 million dollar tournament won by Sergio Garcia last in 2005. In 1992 the 472-yard par four 12th hole was ranked "the toughest hole on the PGA tour". The TPC at Avenel is a private stadium golf facility featuring a 7,005 yard par 71, 18 hole course.
Ranked second on Golf Digest's best Maryland courses is Cave Valley G.C. located in Owings's Mills, Maryland.
Bulle Rock is a public coarse named for the first thoroughbred race horse brought to America. Twice honored as one of only twelve "Five Star Facilities" by Golf Digest.
They also ranked it as the best public coarse in Maryland, and high on the list of the best public courses in the country. Bulle Rock is located in Havre de Grace, MD, just north of Aberdeen, Maryland.
The Players Club at Four Streams is a member owned club dedicated to the advancement of golf as it was meant to be played, on an exhilarating course, in a serene setting, totally devoted to the enjoyment of the game of Golf. Designed by the Price/Smears design group made up of renowned player Nick Price, and Steve Smears, the course hosts the Boomer Esiason Foundation's "Maryland Golf Classic", a charity event to fight Cystic Fibrosis.
Swan Point Yacht and Country Club is another private course located in southern Maryland, on the banks of the Potomac. The unusual terrain for Maryland, and is reminiscent of the barrier islands of the Carolinas, Hilton Head, or Kiawah. Pull your yacht up to the 16th green. Call ahead and someone will meet you with a cart, dock your boat at no charge while you play a round of golf, and drive you the first tea.
