Southern Maryland in 1634 was the fourth permanent settlement established by 140 colonists in the British North America. This is where we get the stories of Thanksgiving and the generosity the Native American showed to the settlers by showing them how to cook corn and live off of the land.

Some of the farm lands available used to be part of plantations that grew tobacco or other hot commodity items. The commercial North America began in these areas. Some of the houses that were built on the plantations are still being used by the commercial industry today either as office building or as bed and breakfast mansions.

A few of the signers of the Declaration of Independence lived in Maryland including Charles Carroll, Samuel Chase, Thomas Stone and William Paca. Maryland was not a significant location for the battles of the American Revolution, but the people of Maryland opened up a port for tax paid tea.

Maryland was on the path of the Underground Railroad for slaves on their way to freedom. Harriet Tubman was born in Maryland and returned many times to help lead more slaves to freedom in Canada. Additionally, Maryland was where Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

Maryland was a location for many battles of the Civil war. Some of the major battles fought were on the Hancock battlefield on January 5-6, 1862 which was inconclusive as to who won, South Mountain battlefield on September 14 1862 which was won by the Union soldiers, Antietam battlefield on September 17, 1862 which was inconclusive as to who won (but has also been said that it gave the union a stragic victory), Williamsport battlefield on July 6, 1863 which was inconclusive as to who won, Boonsboro / Falling Waters battlefield on July 8-14, 1863 which was inconclusive as to who won, Monocacy battlefield on July 9, 1864 which was won by the Confederate soldiers and Folck’s Mill battlefield on August 1, 1864 which was inconclusive as to who won.

The author of this countries anthem, The Star Spangled Banner wrote the word on the battlefields in Maryland.
